About Lap Joint Flanges Lap Joint Flanges (Loose Flanges) are similar to other industrial flanges but lack a raised face. They are used with a "Lap Joint Stub End." The initial cost of a lap joint flange and stub end is about one-third higher than comparable welding neck flanges. The pressure holding capacity is lower, and the fatigue life is only one-tenth of welding neck flanges.
Typically used in piping systems requiring regular dismantling for inspection and cleaning, these flanges slip over the pipe without being welded or fastened. Bolting pressure is transmitted to the gasket by the flange's pressure against the back of the pipe lap (Stub End).
Benefits of Lap Joint Flanges:
- Ease of Alignment: The ability to swivel around the pipe facilitates the alignment of opposing flange bolt holes.
- Cost Efficiency: Lack of contact with the fluid allows for the use of inexpensive carbon steel flanges with corrosion-resistant pipes.
